Refrigerator Water Filters

A household drinking water filter is designed for water that is already fit to drink; it is not intended for microbiologically unsafe water and does not replace a boil water advisory.

Nine genuine cartridges and three aftermarket ones. The genuine group is not uniformly better documented than the aftermarket group, which surprises people: two aftermarket listings name NSF/ANSI 42 outright, while three genuine listings name no certification at all. Both facts are on this page.

Read this before any of it

No filter in this catalog makes unsafe water drinkable. Household drinking water filters are designed for water that is already fit to drink. They are not intended for microbiologically unsafe water and they do not replace a boil water advisory from your utility or health department.

If you suspect lead or contamination in your supply, the next step is your utility's Consumer Confidence Report, the EPA, and your local health department. It is not a purchase.

Genuine manufacturer filters

Nine cartridges sold as original parts. Four name all of NSF 42, 53 and 401. Two name NSF/ANSI with no number. Three name no certification at all, the shortest of them stating only that it is an original part.

  • everydrop Filter 1, EDR1RXD1
Only listing here naming coconut shell carbon

Coconut shell carbon appears on one filter listing in this category. The others name carbon block or name no medium at all.

    everydrop Filter 1, EDR1RXD1

6 month life statedListed here at position 01

The listing states NSF 42, 53 and 401 certification, reduction of 70 contaminants including 99% microplastics, coconut shell carbon, 6-month life.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401.The listing names all three standard numbers, which is why all three cells are filled.

A genuine cartridge whose listing names all three standard numbers, which almost nothing else in this category does. The 70 contaminants and 99% microplastics figures are separate seller claims that sit beside the certification rather than inside it.

    What the listing gives you

    • All three standard numbers are named on the listing, not implied
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Names the filter medium, which most listings here do not
    • Genuine cartridge for the fridges the manufacturer lists

    What it leaves open

    • "70 contaminants" and "99% microplastics" are listing claims with no standard attached
    • A months-only interval ignores how much water you actually draw
    • Genuine cartridges are the expensive way to keep a fridge running

Suits A Whirlpool-family fridge that takes the EDR1RXD1 cartridge.

  • everydrop Filter 2, EDR2RXD1

    everydrop Filter 2, EDR2RXD1

6 month life statedListed here at position 02

The listing states NSF 42, 53 and 401 certification, reduction of 70 contaminants including 99% microplastics, 6-month life.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401.The listing names all three standard numbers, which is why all three cells are filled.

The Filter 2 cartridge, with the same three standard numbers named and the same six month stated interval. The cartridge shape is the difference from Filter 1, not the certification.

    What the listing gives you

    • All three standard numbers are named on the listing
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Same stated certification as the Filter 1 cartridge
    • Genuine cartridge for the fridges the manufacturer lists

    What it leaves open

    • The 70 contaminants figure is a listing claim, not part of the certification
    • A months-only interval ignores actual throughput
    • Cartridge number and fridge model still have to be matched by you

Suits A Whirlpool-family fridge that takes the EDR2RXD1 cartridge.

  • everydrop Filter 4, EDR4RXD1

    everydrop Filter 4, EDR4RXD1

    Listed here at position 03

The listing states NSF 42, 53 and 401 certification and reduction of 32 contaminants including 99% microplastics.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401.The listing names all three standard numbers, which is why all three cells are filled.

The Filter 4 cartridge names the same three standard numbers as Filters 1 and 2 but states 32 contaminants rather than 70. That is the clearest example on this site of two numbers moving independently: the certification is identical, the seller's contaminant count is not.

    What the listing gives you

    • All three standard numbers are named on the listing
    • Shows plainly that a contaminant count and a certification are different things
    • Genuine cartridge for the fridges the manufacturer lists
    • Same stated standards as the higher-count cartridges in this family

    What it leaves open

    • This listing states no replacement interval at all
    • The contaminant count invites a comparison the certification does not support
    • "99% microplastics" is a listing claim with no standard attached

Suits A Whirlpool-family fridge that takes the EDR4RXD1 cartridge.

  • LG LT1000P Refrigerator Filter
Only listing here stating a gallon figure

200 gallons, and it is the one fridge filter listing in this category that states gallons rather than months alone.

    LG LT1000P Refrigerator Filter

200 gallon rating statedListed here at position 04

    The listing states NSF 42, 53 and 401 certification, a 6-month or 200-gallon capacity.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401.The listing names all three standard numbers, which is why all three cells are filled.

A genuine LG cartridge that names all three standard numbers and states both a six month interval and a 200-gallon capacity. Stating both is the correct way to rate a filter, and it is why this listing is the one the filter life tool has the most to work with.

    What the listing gives you

    • States both a months figure and a gallon figure, so either can bind
    • All three standard numbers are named on the listing
    • Genuine cartridge for the fridges the manufacturer lists
    • A gallon figure lets a heavy-use household plan honestly

    What it leaves open

    • Two ratings means remembering that the earlier one is the one that applies
    • No filter medium is named on the listing
    • Genuine LG cartridges are the costlier route

Suits An LG fridge that takes the LT1000P cartridge.

  • GE XWFE Refrigerator Filter

    GE XWFE Refrigerator Filter

6 month life statedListed here at position 05

The listing states certification to NSF/ANSI standards and reduction of lead, sulfur and 50+ impurities, 6-month replacement.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names NSF/ANSI without naming a standard number, so no cell is filled here.

A genuine GE cartridge whose listing says NSF/ANSI standards without saying which ones, and separately claims lead and sulfur reduction plus 50+ impurities. This site does not turn an unnumbered mention into a numbered one, so all three chip cells stay empty here.

    What the listing gives you

    • Genuine cartridge for the GE fridges that take XWFE
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Names two specific substances rather than only a count
    • The most commonly stocked GE cartridge of the two here

    What it leaves open

    • No standard number is named, so the certification cannot be read
    • "50+ impurities" is a count with no standard behind it
    • No gallon capacity is stated

Suits A GE fridge that takes the XWFE cartridge.

  • GE RPWFE Refrigerator Filter

    GE RPWFE Refrigerator Filter

6 month life statedListed here at position 06

The listing states certification to NSF/ANSI standards and reduction of lead, sulfur and 50+ impurities, 6-month replacement.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names NSF/ANSI without naming a standard number, so no cell is filled here.

The RPWFE cartridge carries the same unnumbered certification wording as the XWFE listing and the same six month interval. It is a different cartridge for different fridges, and the listing gives no more detail on standards than its sibling.

    What the listing gives you

    • Genuine cartridge for the GE fridges that take RPWFE
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Names two specific substances rather than only a count
    • Same wording as the XWFE listing, so nothing is hidden between them

    What it leaves open

    • No standard number is named, so the certification cannot be read
    • "50+ impurities" is a count with no standard behind it
    • No aftermarket alternative in this catalog states RPWFE compatibility

Suits A GE fridge that takes the RPWFE cartridge.

  • Samsung HAF-QIN Refrigerator Filter

    Samsung HAF-QIN Refrigerator Filter

6 month life statedListed here at position 07

The listing states a genuine Samsung filter with a 6-month life.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names no certification, so no cell is filled here.

A genuine Samsung cartridge with a stated six month life and no certification named anywhere in the listing. That is not a criticism of the cartridge; it is a statement about what the listing gives you to read.

    What the listing gives you

    • Genuine cartridge for the Samsung fridges that take HAF-QIN
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Short listing that claims nothing it does not support
    • No inflated impurity count to discount

    What it leaves open

    • The listing names no certification at all

    • Nothing on the listing distinguishes it from the other Samsung cartridge here

Suits A Samsung fridge that takes the HAF-QIN cartridge.

  • Samsung HAF-CIN Refrigerator Filter
Only listing here naming a carbon block

Carbon block appears on one filter listing in this category. The others name coconut shell carbon or name no medium.

    Samsung HAF-CIN Refrigerator Filter

6 month life statedListed here at position 08

The listing states a genuine Samsung carbon block filter with a 6-month life.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names no certification, so no cell is filled here.

The other genuine Samsung cartridge, differing from its sibling by naming a carbon block medium. Like the HAF-QIN listing, it names no certification, so the chip shows three empty cells and says why.

    What the listing gives you

    • Genuine cartridge for the Samsung fridges that take HAF-CIN
    • Names the filter medium, unlike the other Samsung listing here
    • Stated six month replacement interval
    • Makes no claims it cannot support

    What it leaves open

    • The listing names no certification at all
    • Naming a medium says nothing about what it reduces
    • No gallon capacity is stated

Suits A Samsung fridge that takes the HAF-CIN cartridge.

    Only Frigidaire cartridge listed here

Frigidaire appears on one filter listing in this category. Every other cartridge here is Whirlpool-family, GE, LG or Samsung.

Frigidaire ULTRAWF Pure Source Ultra Filter

    Listed here at position 09

The listing states an original Frigidaire filter.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names no certification, so no cell is filled here.

The shortest listing in this category: an original Frigidaire cartridge, and nothing else stated. No certification, no interval, no medium. The trade name borrows a word that reads like an outcome, and a trade name is not a description of what comes out of the fridge.

    What the listing gives you

    • Stated as an original manufacturer cartridge
    • The only cartridge here for Frigidaire fridges
    • Nothing is overclaimed because almost nothing is claimed
    • Simple to match by cartridge code

    What it leaves open

    • No certification, no interval and no capacity are stated
    • The brand name includes a word that reads like a performance claim
    • Nothing on the listing to compare against another cartridge

Aftermarket, compatibility stated by the seller

Three cartridges whose fit is stated by the seller rather than by the fridge manufacturer. Two name NSF/ANSI 42 and one names no standard. A narrower named standard is a real difference in scope, not a brand preference.

  • Crystala XWFE Compatible Filter

    Crystala XWFE Compatible Filter

    Listed here at position 10

The listing states NSF/ANSI 42 certification and replacement for GE XWFE and XWF, with a built-in chip.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42. Not named: 53, 401.The listing names NSF/ANSI 42 and no other number, so one cell is filled and two stay empty. Nothing here implies 53 or 401.

An aftermarket cartridge whose listing names NSF/ANSI 42 and states it replaces GE XWFE and XWF. Naming 42 is more than the genuine GE listing manages, and it is also narrower than 42, 53 and 401 together. Both of those things are true at once.

    What the listing gives you

    • Names an actual standard number, which the genuine GE listing does not
    • States a built-in chip, which is what the fridge electronics look for
    • Names the two cartridge codes it is stated to replace
    • Makes the narrow scope legible instead of hiding it

    What it leaves open

    • NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste, odor and particulate, not the 53 and 401 lists
    • Compatibility is stated by this seller, not by the fridge manufacturer
    • No replacement interval and no gallon capacity are stated

Suits A GE fridge owner who wants the standard number stated rather than implied.

    GLACIER FRESH XWFE Compatible Filter

    Listed here at position 11

The listing states NSF/ANSI 42 certification and replacement for GE XWFE and XWF, with a built-in chip.

    4253401

Named on the listing: NSF/ANSI 42. Not named: 53, 401.The listing names NSF/ANSI 42 and no other number, so one cell is filled and two stay empty. Nothing here implies 53 or 401.

The second aftermarket XWFE cartridge here, with the same stated NSF/ANSI 42 certification and the same built-in chip. Two sellers, the same standard number, the same stated cartridge codes: the comparison on the XWFE page is between these two and the genuine cartridge.

    What the listing gives you

    • Names an actual standard number rather than a vague certification line
    • States a built-in chip for the fridge electronics
    • Names the two cartridge codes it is stated to replace
    • Gives the XWFE page a second aftermarket listing to read against

    What it leaves open

    • NSF/ANSI 42 alone is a narrower claim than 42, 53 and 401 together
    • Compatibility is stated by this seller, not by the fridge manufacturer
    • No replacement interval and no gallon capacity are stated

Suits A GE fridge owner comparing two aftermarket cartridges on the same stated standard.

Only listing here that includes an air filter

One filter listing in this category includes an air filter alongside the water cartridge. The other eleven are water cartridges only.

Waterdrop LG-Compatible Filter and Air Filter, 3 combo

    Listed here at position 12

The listing states replacement for LG LT1000PC, LT1000P/PCS and several LG refrigerator models.

    4253401

No standard number is named on the listing. Not named: 42, 53, 401.The listing names no certification, so no cell is filled here.

An aftermarket combination pack stated to replace the LG LT1000PC and LT1000P/PCS cartridges, with an air filter included. No certification is named anywhere in the listing, which is the contrast with the genuine LG cartridge that names all three standard numbers.

    What the listing gives you

    • Includes the fridge air filter, which is a separate purchase otherwise
    • Names the specific LG cartridge codes it is stated to replace
    • A combination pack covers two replacement schedules at once
    • Makes the gap against the genuine cartridge easy to see

    What it leaves open

    • The listing names no certification and no standard number
    • Compatibility is stated by this seller, not by LG
    • No replacement interval and no gallon capacity are stated

Suits An LG owner who wants the water and air cartridges in one order.

Care and the parts that are not negotiable

  • Match the cartridge code, not the fridge brand. Codes are printed on the old cartridge and in the fridge documentation.
  • When an aftermarket listing names one standard and a genuine listing names three, that is a difference in what each has been certified to reduce, not a difference in marketing tone.
  • Where a listing gives both months and gallons, replace at whichever arrives first.
  • If you suspect lead or contamination in your supply, contact your utility and your local health department and read your Consumer Confidence Report. A cartridge is not the answer to that question.

Questions this category actually raises

Is an aftermarket filter as certified as the genuine one?

It depends entirely on what each listing names, and on this page it goes both ways. Two aftermarket cartridges name NSF/ANSI 42, which is narrower than the 42, 53 and 401 named by four genuine cartridges. Three genuine cartridges name nothing at all.

Will an aftermarket cartridge fit my refrigerator?

This site cannot tell you that. The listing states which cartridge codes it replaces, and that statement belongs to the seller. Check the code on your existing cartridge and in your fridge documentation before ordering.

What does 50+ impurities mean?

It is a count published by a seller, with no standard behind it and no list attached. A cartridge naming NSF/ANSI 53 has a defined set of reduction claims; a cartridge naming a large number has a number.

Does a built-in chip affect filtration?

No. It is electronics the refrigerator looks for so the filter indicator behaves. Two aftermarket listings here state one. It says nothing about what the cartridge reduces.
